COB Smart is a registry of membership information that allows participating health plans the ability to identify instances where their shared membership has coverage overlaps. The goal of COB Smart is for the industry – healthcare providers and health plans – to “get it right the first time” when submitting and processing healthcare claims. Each week, participating health plans submit coverage information to the COB Smart solution, where data is matched and evaluated for potential overlaps and, where possible, determine primacy for involved health plans. CAQH also works with health plans and national claims clearinghouses to get relevant COB information to healthcare providers via ANSI X12 HIPAA 271 responses to eligibility inquiries. COB Smart is fully HIPAA compliant, and applies strong administrative, technical and physical safeguards to protect the integrity of member coverage information.
